    dissertationThree-dimensional (3D) models of industrial plant primitives are used extensively in modern asset design, management, and visualization systems. Such systems allow users to efficiently perform tasks in Computer Aided Design (CAD), life-cycle management, construction progress monitoring, virtual reality training, marketing walk-throughs, or other visualization. Thus, capturing industrial plant models has correspondingly become a rapidly growing industry. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate an efficient way to ascertain physical model parameters of reflectance properties of industrial plant primitives for use in CAD and 3D modeling visualization systems. The first part of this research outlines the sources of error corresponding to 3D models created from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds. Fourier analysis exposes the error due to a LiDAR system's finite sampling rate. Taylor expansion illustrates the errors associated with linearization due to flat polygonal surfaces. Finally, a statistical analysis of the error associated with LiDar scanner hardware is presented. The second part of this research demonstrates a method for determining Phong specular and Oren-Nayar diffuse reflectance parameters for modeling and rendering pipes, the most ubiquitous form of industrial plant primitives. For specular reflectance, the Phong model is used. Estimates of specular and diffuse parameters of two ideal cylinders and one measured cylinder using brightness data acquired from a LiDAR scanner are presented. The estimated reflectance model of the measured cylinder has a mean relative error of 2.88% and a standard deviation of relative error of 4.0%. The final part of this research describes a method for determining specular, diffuse and color material properties and applies the method to seven pipes from an industrial plant. The colorless specular and diffuse properties were estimated by numerically inverting LiDAR brightness data. The color ambient and diffuse properties are estimated using k-means clustering. The colorless properties yielded estimated brightness values that are within an RMS of 3.4% with a maximum of 7.0% and a minimum of 1.6%. The estimated color properties effected an RMS residual of 13.2% with a maximum of 20.3% and a minimum of 9.1%

    A Call for Gender-Inclusive Global Health Strategies

    The WHO\u27s Global Strategy for Women\u27s, Children\u27s, and Adolescents\u27 Health 2016-2030 (GS-WCAH 2016-2030) is a comprehensive plan developed to improve the lives of women, children, and adolescents. Due to the success in the creation, ratification, and advocacy of the GS-WCAH 2016-2030, the clear health outcome disparities between males and females, and the general absence of male health from existing policies and sponsored programs, it is time now to develop a global strategy specifically drafted to improve the lives of men and boys. The following commentary provides three points for why a male-oriented program, like the GS-WCAH 2016-2030, should be created: (a) health outcomes disparities, (b) economic impact of poor male health, and (c) fathers\u27 role in promoting the health of women, children, and adolescents. Implications for how male health can be incorporated into future projects and priorities are provided, as well as advocacy for overall gender-inclusivity in regard to global public health efforts

    End-to-end numerical modeling of the Roman Space Telescope coronagraph

    The Roman Space Telescope will have the first advanced coronagraph in space, with deformable mirrors for wavefront control, low-order wavefront sensing and maintenance, and a photon-counting detector. It is expected to be able to detect and characterize mature, giant exoplanets in reflected visible light. Over the past decade the performance of the coronagraph in its flight environment has been simulated with increasingly detailed diffraction and structural/thermal finite element modeling. With the instrument now being integrated in preparation for launch within the next few years, the present state of the end-to-end modeling is described, including the measured flight components such as deformable mirrors. The coronagraphic modes are thoroughly described, including characteristics most readily derived from modeling. The methods for diffraction propagation, wavefront control, and structural and thermal finite-element modeling are detailed. The techniques and procedures developed for the instrument will serve as a foundation for future coronagraphic missions such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory.Comment: 113 pages, 85 figures, to be published in SPIE Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and System

    Natural selection shaped the rise and fall of passenger pigeon genomic diversity.

    The extinct passenger pigeon was once the most abundant bird in North America, and possibly the world. Although theory predicts that large populations will be more genetically diverse, passenger pigeon genetic diversity was surprisingly low. To investigate this disconnect, we analyzed 41 mitochondrial and 4 nuclear genomes from passenger pigeons and 2 genomes from band-tailed pigeons, which are passenger pigeons' closest living relatives. Passenger pigeons' large population size appears to have allowed for faster adaptive evolution and removal of harmful mutations, driving a huge loss in their neutral genetic diversity. These results demonstrate the effect that selection can have on a vertebrate genome and contradict results that suggested that population instability contributed to this species's surprisingly rapid extinction

    Recovered memories, satanic abuse, Dissociative Identity Disorder and false memories in the UK: a survey of Clinical Psychologists and Hypnotherapists

    An online survey was conducted to examine psychological therapists’ experiences of, and beliefs about, cases of recovered memory, satanic / ritualistic abuse, Multiple Personality Disorder / Dissociative Identity Disorder, and false memory. Chartered Clinical Psychologists (n=183) and Hypnotherapists (n=119) responded. In terms of their experiences, Chartered Clinical Psychologists reported seeing more cases of satanic / ritualistic abuse compared to Hypnotherapists who, in turn, reported encountering more cases of childhood sexual abuse recovered for the first time in therapy, and more cases of suspected false memory. Chartered Clinical Psychologists were more likely to rate the essential accuracy of reports of satanic / ritualistic abuse as higher than Hypnotherapists. Belief in the accuracy of satanic / ritualistic abuse and Multiple Personality Disorder / Dissociative Identity Disorder reports correlated negatively with the belief that false memories were possible

    A Multisite Preregistered Paradigmatic Test of the Ego-Depletion Effect

    We conducted a preregistered multilaboratory project (k = 36; N = 3,531) to assess the size and robustness of ego-depletion effects using a novel replication method, termed the paradigmatic replication approach. Each laboratory implemented one of two procedures that was intended to manipulate self-control and tested performance on a subsequent measure of self-control. Confirmatory tests found a nonsignificant result (d = 0.06). Confirmatory Bayesian meta-analyses using an informed-prior hypothesis (δ = 0.30, SD = 0.15) found that the data were 4 times more likely under the null than the alternative hypothesis. Hence, preregistered analyses did not find evidence for a depletion effect. Exploratory analyses on the full sample (i.e., ignoring exclusion criteria) found a statistically significant effect (d = 0.08); Bayesian analyses showed that the data were about equally likely under the null and informed-prior hypotheses. Exploratory moderator tests suggested that the depletion effect was larger for participants who reported more fatigue but was not moderated by trait self-control, willpower beliefs, or action orientation.</p
